Sony has completed its nearly $1.2 billion acquisition from AT&T of the anime streaming service Crunchyroll.
First announced in December, the acquisition will see Crunchyroll, with its 5 million subscribers and more than 120 million registered users, housed under its now former main rival Funimation.
Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures says the plan is to create “a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.” Details of how they will combine Crunchyroll and Funimation remain unclear, but for the moment the two services will remain separate.
Crunchyroll boasts over 1,000 anime titles and distribution rights for more than 30,000 episodes. It also comes with an extensive library and a gaming division that develops web and mobile games based on popular shows in English-speaking markets.
