The crisis caused by the ongoing registration by the All Progressives Congress has deepened in several states including Benue and Kwara even as the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has warned the APC leadership in Delta State against causing crisis.
Keyamo gave the warning in a statement on Wednesday titled, A note to Delta State Chairman of the APC Membership, Revalidation and Update Committee: On no account must two coordinators from any LGA be nominated by one political leader in Delta State.
He said, As you are set to distribute your materials to the LGA coordinators on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, you must bear in mind the need to balance all the delicate interests within the APC in Delta State in such a way that you dont put the entire materials meant for any LGA in the hands of two coordinators solely nominated by a particular political leader in the state, including myself.
Tension over APC chairs killing in Bnue
The PUNCH learnt that in Benue State the tension generated by the brutal killing of the APC Ward Chairman, Gboko South Local Government Area of Benue State, Tersoo Ahu showed no sign of abating on Wednesday.
Chairman and Secretary of the APC in the local government, Tarnongo Bam and Terver Kyermum respectively have resorted to a verbal war over alleged complicity in Ahus death.
Recall that Ahu was killed in an attack during a stakeholders meeting convened to sensitise APC members on the membership registration and revalidation exercise, in Gboko, on Sunday.
In a statement, on Wednesday, Bam accused a federal lawmaker of complicity in Ahus murder.
Bam, said this in the statement titled, Press Statement by the All Progressive Congress, Gboko Local Government Area over the killing of Mr. Tersoo Ahu, Chairman of the APC in Gboko South Council Ward.
The statement read in part, The APC family in Gboko LGA regrets a recent outburst and threats to members of the party at funerals by the member of the House of Representatives, John Dyegh, which has emboldened the hoodlums to launch attacks on members of the party.
He explained that the inauguration of a group known as Politics of New Ideas, by the lawmaker destroyed the peace hitherto enjoyed by the APC in Gboko and entrenched lawlessness. The party chairman urged security agencies to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
However, the party Secretary, Kyermum, absolved the lawmaker of blame and accused the chairman of instigating the crisis.
In his statement titled, RE: Press Release by Hon. Mnyam Bam, Chairman- Gboko APC, Kyermum said, This sad event could have been averted but for greed and biased approaches, poor leadership disposition of Hon. Mnyam Bam plus needless struggle for dominion by (one other).
When contacted, Dyegh denied complicity while condemning the killing.
He said, I have not killed even a fly to get elected three times and shall not by the Grace of God Almighty shed any blood. If leaving politics or APC will bring peace, I am ready to do so because I cannot step on innocent blood into any office.
Umahi seeks more forms
Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has pleaded with the national leadership of the APC to send additional registration forms to the South-East.
He made the appeal during a courtesy call on the Chairman, APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee, Governor Mai Mala Buni, at the partys National Secretariat, in Abuja, on Wednesday.
Umahi later told reporters, I complained to him (Buni) that the hundreds of forms at the polling units is a far cry from what we expected. Everybody in South-East wants to belong to the APC.
In Gombe, Senator Danjuma Goje who revalidated his membership of the party on Wednesday said, I want to seize this opportunity to call on intending members to come out en masse to register as well as to revalidate their membership.
In Katsina State, a Chieftain of the party, Senator Abu Ali, noted that the exercise was in compliance with provisions of the APC Constitution.
He said, I dont see anything wrong with the exercise being done now. The whole idea is to have a comprehensive list of our members to give room for every party member to be registered and promote internal democracy. The list would be computerised to allow for easier reach and accountability.
Were aiming for 600,00 APC members in AIbom
The APC Chairman in Akwa Ibom State, Dr Ita Udosen, while speaking about the exercise in Uyo, revealed that the party hopes to register 600,000 members at the end of the exercise.
In Borno State, Governor Babagana Zulum, and his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima, led other party members in taking part in the exercise with no reported incident as of the time of filing this report.
In Kwara State some party leaders alleged that registration materials were being hoarded.
Spokesperson for the ACP group, Chief Sunday Oyebiyi, who is also the state APC Vice Chairman, revealed this at a media briefing in Ilorin, on Wednesday.
He said, We state in clear unequivocal terms that majority of the Caretaker state Executive Committee members of the APC in Kwara State were never carried along in the events leading to the exercise.
We demand a more inclusive approach to the exercise. If we, the state executive committee members, the LG chairmen and their executives, the ward chairmen and their executives, are in the dark, what then is the essence of the exercise?
The Chairman of Kwara APC, Alhaji Abdulahi Samari, however, urged party members to remain peaceful as they take part in the exercise. He explained that there was no justification for anyone to resort to self-help because every willing person will be registered.
Amosun slams registration critics
In Ogun, Senator Ibikunle Amosun said opponents of the registration exercise had ulterior motives. He spoke after revalidating his membership, at his Itoko, Ward 6, Abeokuta South Local Government Area, on Wednesday.
He was accompanied by his wife, Olufunsho and the Nigerian Ambassador to the UK, Sarafa Isola and several of his political associates.
Amosun said, On the registration, people have asked me: is this thing necessary? Yes. Like yesterday, if you have anything, maybe yesterday and you want to know where are we today, the best way of finding out is what we are doing. Unless (people) who have any other ulterior motive.
In Anambra State, the chairman of the APC panel sent to the state, Bello Tukur, warned party members against attempts to induce the panel.
He said, Theres no room for any form of manipulation. This exercise excludes those tendencies. If someone thinks he can inflate any figure and get it into the register he is making a serious mistake.
