High street store Debenhams picked clean as it shuts its doors for good

High street retailer Debenhams closed its doors for the very last time today as customers said their farewells to a brand that has been around for 242 years.
In the days leading up to today’s final closure, the store heavily discounted its remaining stock with up to 80% off all fashion and homeware and up to 70% off beauty and fragrance while stocks last.
Inevitably this has seen Debenhams stripped bare as customers grabbed last-minute bargains before the retailer shut the store for good.
Empty clothes rails, bare makeup counters and ‘everything must go’ signs are all that remain of the Lord Street store in Liverpool ONE.
Photos taken inside the store last week showed the heartbreaking reality of what is yet another blow for the high street, with the store virtually empty of stock with Debenham’s cafe empty, its makeup counters picked clean and minimal stock left available.
The retail giant went into administration in April 2019 as it struggled to adapt to rising competition from online rivals and a decline in high street shopping.

The company announced last year it would be closing its doors and 52 stores, including Debenhams on Lord Street in Southport.
Debenhams will operate online-only when stores permanently close their doors after being bought by Boohoo in January 2021. The purchase only included the Debenhams name and website, but not its physical stores.

A spokesperson for Debenhams said: “Debenhams will close its doors on the high street for the final time in its 242-year history.
“Our sincere thanks go out to all of our colleagues and customers who have joined us on this journey. We hope to see you all one last time in stores before we say a final goodbye to the UK high street.”
