Cristiano Ronaldo was delighted to have helped his Portugal side off to a winning start at this summer’s European Championship, beating Hungary 3-0 on Tuesday evening.
The Juventus forward scored twice as the European champions started on the right food, with each coming after Raphael Guerreiro’s opener in the 84th minute.
“It was so important to start like this,” Cristiano said after the game. “Now we have to continue. We’ve got to think about the next game and winning that.
“The important thing was to win. It was a difficult game against an opponent who defended well, but we scored three goals.
“I’m grateful to the team for helping me to score twice and to be named the star of the game.”
Ronaldo’s brace made him the tournament’s all-time record goalscorer, and allowed him to get ever closer to Ali Daei’s record of 109 international goals, now just three off.
