This symbol is reminiscent of the current on the 30-pin connector (instead of lightning), which was used to indicate the insertion direction to the iPod and iPhone. The Lightning differs greatly in size from its predecessor, as well as the fact that you can insert the connector in any direction. It was one of the main sales outlets Apple put forward to comfort everyone who was lamenting the change at the time (accessories needed to be purchased).
